It is "common knowledge" that cholesterol and saturated fat cause heart disease. This "knowledge" comes from the same people who believe that obesity is caused by over eating and a lack of exercise. Both of these theories may SOUND good, but, like the belief in big foot, ghosts and the Loch Ness monster, it just doesn't hold up to scientific scrutiny.
This series of short videos show Dr. Malcolm Kendrick speaking at a British Medical Association meeting in Leeds. He examines the "common knowledge" and seriously makes you wonder how people came to believe it in the first place.

I found those videos very interesting. I come from Newfoundland, Canada. Our population (80% derived from Irish immigrants)has a history of economic shortfalls that result in a large majority being forced to emmigrate to other parts of Canada to find employment. We also have about the highest non-aboriginal heart disease rates in the country, both here in the province and among Newfoundlanders living across Canada. Some of that is surely due to genetic founders effect (so many of us descended from so few)which could show a familial predisposition. After viewing Dr. Kendricks presentation, I can't help but wonder how much of our heart disease is due to social dislocation. Especially when you consider that the vast majority of that emmigration is forced and not completely voluntary. Very interesting indeed. Thank you Zilla for posting the link in your Blog!
